The Pfizer Clinical Research Unit in New Haven is looking for healthy adult volunteers interested in supporting obesity and weight-management research in New Haven, CT.

Obesity is a chronic weight condition that increases the potential risk of other illnesses such as stroke and diabetes. By 2030, it is projected that over a billion people worldwide will be considered obese.

While the scientific and medical community defines obesity as a complex, multifactorial disease requiring prevention and treatment efforts, there is still stigma associated with this condition that impacts patients’ quality of life and access to care. Most people with obesity do not receive any treatment, and diet and lifestyle changes are often not effective or accessible for everyone. Research into additional medication options is therefore essential for patients’ long-term well-being.

Healthy Volunteers in Obesity Clinical Trials

Obesity is a complex disease influenced by a person’s genes, hormones, and other conditions, and can lead to other serious health complications. Many people incorrectly believe that the solution to obesity and related conditions is to diet and exercise, but these are sometimes not accessible or effective for all patients. We know alternatives are needed, including medication options, to support patients’ long-term health and well-being, and more research is necessary to provide the best care possible.

Phase 1 clinical trials often involve people without the condition being studied, called healthy participants. Including healthy participants helps us understand how a study drug or study vaccine affects the body, determine proper dosing, and collect information about possible side effects. This is one way to learn more about a potential treatment before giving it to patients with complex medical histories.

In some obesity clinical trials, healthy participants may also need to meet certain BMI criteria. Because things like weight and metabolism can impact how medication works, it’s important to include participants that resemble the patient population. This improves the accuracy and reliability of the data and ensures that future patients receive medications founded on high-quality research.
